A Ray of Sanguinity

Description

Thin did a net of clouds part upon the Earth, allowing the dim rays of the sun to gently kiss its prehistoric remains... if for but only a moment. But within that moment, more than mere dust was licked with those muted beams of sanguinity....

YES!!! It's finally finished!!!

The origins behind this particular composition is but a simple one: While browsing the news station over at Upcoming Pixar, I came across an interesting article -- or, photographic base, rather -- which highlighted the release of a new batch of images from the upcoming feature film, WALL•E. Intrigued, I made to explore the subject further and came upon this image of the little robotic protagonist:

(Note: To view the screenshot in question, simply click on the link and select the image featuring WALL•E holding up a small panel so as to catch a ray or two of sunlight.)

As soon as I saw that image I just... inwardly gaped. That thing screamed to me, just... screamed! (Well, almost anyway.) The word "draw" was written all over it. Naturally, I just had to pick up a pencil and paper and get to work.

I composed this image by way of superimposing over a printed version of the original, rendered screenshot. A light box was used, of course, as were numerous pencils of varying "weight". I'm estimating that the entire piece took approximately two to three hours to complete, but that is a wild guess taking into account the fact that I didn't time myself while drawing it.

If you compare the original image to my version (above), you'll notice that there are quite a few mistakes, many of which I didn't realize until I had finished the piece. I blame the light box, as it was rather difficult to see certain sections of WALL•E's body while using it. (I could have looked underneath my piece of paper at the original version during certain intervals, of course, but I had everything taped down and didn't want to mess up anything.)

In any case, this was a fun exercise for me. I absolutely love doing detailed drawings, so this was a blast to flesh out, from birth to completion. It will be included in my portfolio, as well.

If anyone has any suggestions, critique, or comments, then please don't hesitate to spill them out! I can use all the help I can get, so any assistance is much appreciated. :aww:

Edit: To everyone who is wondering: Generally, I do not support the act of uploading traced and/or superimposed images to deviantArt at all. The only reasons why this is the only exception to that rule (in my gallery) are because: a) the original image I used as a reference/base was not drawn traditionally, but rendered digitally, and, b) only 90% of the image was superimposed. Those who feel that these reasons are not sufficient enough to upload a piece of artwork such as this may feel free to disagree with me via a personal message/notification.

Although the links are dead, I seem to recall myself first seeing Wall•E for the first time on the internet: his expression into the heavens as he charged up through the sun into his robotic form. This artwork does him complete justice, and the vision is a striking tale.

The lack of colour impacts positively, and his central position gives him the proper authority. By making the background clear and subtle (an opposite to his desolate and over-polluted world) you have enriched the form of the story in a clearly different way that adds authenticity. It works well to see Wall•E, all alone in nothingness, staring into the heavens and his future.

Through the attention to detail you have sketched him as a value of hope and admiration; in his eyes you see dreaming and wonder that is eloquent via your pencil work. The various types of pencils you have used as your weapons of choice has added a subtle and elegant expression of different parts to a whole - who Wall•E is. He is also reinforced via the shading, again, there is amazing evidence of subtle and rich work here.

The impact of this work reflects the ideologies of the film, about Wall•E's wonder, and his adventure. His position here is powering up, the start of the day, and you can't wait to see how he goes from there. You have created a prime piece of artwork, my friend.
