What does a floating house, a talking dog, and an old man have in common? They all play a part in Disney/Pixar's latest production, Up, which made its debut in the U.S. on the 29th of May. They're also present in the video game adaption of the film, in which one will follow the spectacular and hair-raising adventures of Carl Fredricksen and Wilderness Explorer, Russell.
In Up: The Video Game, players will battle contemptible enemies, face perilous caverns and crevices, uncover hidden secrets, and overcome countless obstacles, all in an attempt to traverse the tepuis of South America so as to reach their final destination: Paradise Falls!
Playable characters include Carl Fredricksen and Russell... and, in special cases, Dug the talking dog and Kevin the colorful bird. Each character, in turn, comes equipped with their own unique abilities; for example, one can use Carl's hearing aid to ward off advancing foes, whereas only Dug can crawl through doggie-sized openings in order to access secret areas. Additionally, players will unveil useful tools throughout certain levels, tools that Carl and Russell can weild, such as the magnifying glass and the grappling hook.
For those adventure seekers who wish to travel with a companion, co-operative play is right at their fingertips. Play alongside a friend in the "Chapters" section, or engage in head-to-head championships in the "Minigames" arena.
Don't think that this game is devoid of subsurface challenges. Serious explorers must uncover sheltered objects, beat their time scores, and complete each and every level if they wish to lay claim to a 100% status for the entire game. They must also earn enough points should they so choose to unlock such tasty treats as cheat codes, original artwork, and high-resolution images.
Overall, gameplay is fun and interactive, encouraging young explorers to think their way out of tough situations while entertaining the young-at-heart with humorous dialogue and an intriguing storyline. It's an adventure you won't want to miss.
Up: The Video Game is now available for purchase in stores and on-line, and is formatted for such platforms as the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox, Windows XP, Sony PSP, and PlayStations 2 and 3.
