Description

This is part of a work-in-progress that may or may not go anywhere. I've been going through a lot of stuff, so whenever I find something that instills in me a drive to get up and not give up I latch onto it. Katy Perry's song "Love Me" has really helped me to the point where I created, in my head, an entire animated short film to go along with it. Afterwards, I proceeded to sketch up a few random "mini beat boards" to go along with what my mind conjured up. I'll probably never animate the thing, but I know exactly how I want it to look. This may very well be the only tangible part of the idea that ever comes out.

If you're wondering, that character is me. Very rarely do I ever do myself. I don't look quite like that, but eh. It's a cartoon. Ha. I kinda like how that middle profile drawing came out....

Hey, cool beat boards! Never mind that you probably won't finish the actual film, I start things that I don't finish all the time: it still makes for great practice.

I don't know the song but I'm gonna take a guess here and say that your story is about a girl who is kept down by her fears and frustrations, embodied in those shadow monsters? At first the girl is afraid of the monsters and tries to fight them, only to realize that they are part of her personality and that she should embrace them as such in the end. (I assume, I don't see the ending pictured in your boards)

I like the little head sketches of your character, esp that last one. But for a stoyboard it really doesn't need that level of detail and shading. If you board traditionaly why not try drawing in ink? The Pentell Sign and Papermate Flair are great (and cheap!) pens used by professionals worldwide. They will force you to work fast and will keep you from over-polishing and shading, which is not really necessary at this point in the process.

The one thing you want your boards to do is communicate clearly. At this point your boarding for yourself, so it's perfectly clear what you mean to you . But try to imagine a different artist picking up your boards, will they be able to get what you are trying to say? I think that esp the first and the last panel could be more clear, I'm not sure what is going on there. I also think that there are quite a few beats still missing, and I'm not just talking about the ending here. It's not really clear to me how we move from the one beat to the next.

You might already know the blog of storyartist Josh 'Hat' Lieberman? If not check it out, that dude posted some awesome tips and tricks back in 2011. Example: kn8ian.blogspot.com/2011/04/mo…

This is my first Deviantart critique, I hope I'm not too harsh with the ratings. I like the appeal of your stuff and you can obviously draw. I rated you based on how well this works as a storyboard (to me). I think it's a cool idea, maybe you should spend some more time on it?

Hope this helps, just keep drawing and never forget to have fun!
