Olaf by Mitch-el Olaf by Mitch-el
I don't like Olaf. His design doesn't seem to translate well in 3D to me, and his personality is just... annoying. Then again, I haven't seen the film yet, so I really should save my breath until after the movie has been released. However, despite my dislike of this character, his design in 2D is flat out adorable. I mean, look at these charming sketches:

They should have just done the freakin' thing traditionally. Alas, we'll have to choke down the final computer animated designs in the theater. I must say that Olaf is a ton of fun to draw with a pencil. The irony.

- Mitch

Olaf is the property of Disney Animation Studios.

I can't help but love the way you draw the expressions. Especially the eyes and mouth. He's such a cute character!! Love I really the one where he's wrapped up in a scarf and he looks kinda angry but it's still adorable! Giggle Is there a small story to that?

Awwww. Thank you so much!! I'm glad you like them! :thanks:

Nah. No story to go with the scarf. Just drew it for fun. :aww:

Well, it's still very cute. If you added a story to it what would it be? I'm sorry I just really love the sketch, and I just admire great artists and I just love how there's always something that just grabs my attention. It kinda looks like he got in trouble and is now in time out, but they're all still great like your other Olaf sketches! Your art is good enough to be featured in Disney! I hope to someday get there to work with amazing people!

Hmm. You know, I'm not sure. Ha-ha. Maybe you can make up a story for it? :aww:

Aww, gee. Thank you so much!! I'm truly flattered. :thanks:

All the best to you in working in the industry, too!! :aww:

I love Olaf! He's so cute. I thought he was adorable when I first saw the teaser trailer for the movie. I also like him because he's a little sweet heart. :P

Now for my favorite Olaf quotes :3 (or sayings)

Olaf-"I don't have a skull!......Or bones.."

Olaf-"Hi I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!"

Olaf-"Some people are worth melting for."

Oh, he is a fun character in the actual film! The trailers made him look like he was flat out annoying, but I'm glad that that wasn't the case. Ha-ha.

Ha-ha. Thanks! He actually is rather likable as a personality in the final film, although I still prefer the traditionally drawn version of him as compared to the computer animated one.

Eh. He was okay, but there was a remaining and eternal hate for him the entire time I watched the movie, so I was distracted from any character recovery on his behalf. Agreed about the traditional bit.

I thought that Olaf was going to be the most annoying sidekick ever, but thankfully I was mistaken, and wound up enjoying him completely. He does look like a lot of fun to draw, though.

Dude, NOT cool. I understand if you have a different opinion and swearing can be easily forgiven, but threatening physical violence is completely unnecessary, immature, and wrong on every level of decency.

I really love how expressive these sketches are! You have a knack for drawing emotional expressions and gestures.

Olaf has a pretty unusual snowman design, which I like. The artists gave him a weirdly-shaped head and some fairly unconventional facial features.

Yeah, for a snowman, he's pretty unique in design, which is a good thing... for it makes him more distinguishable. :)

I agree! :O
I was really cynical about the movie when I heard about it over the summer and whatnot. A co-worker pointed out that I should give it a chance and that Olaf would probably be an interesting, unique character. And I agree!
By the way, your icon is very cute!

Same here. Originally, it didn't sit well with me that they deviated so much from the story, but they did their own thing and it worked, so I'm not complaining anymore. Ha-ha.

Thank you, by the way! :thanks:

There's nothing wrong with computer animation. The only negative, really, is that the industry has embraced it to such an extent that traditional animation has been almost entirely forsaken. Individual artists are still doing traditional works, of course, and you still see traditionally animated bits and credits in feature films on occasion (and even those are done digitally most of the time), but in the world of Hollywood and other major studios... you don't see it nearly as much, if at all, anymore. Many traditional artists have lost their jobs or have a really tough time finding work these days because of it, and some have had to just move on. I believe that there needs to be a steady balance between all mediums, traditional, digital, stop-motion, et cetera.

Sorry for the long post there! Heh. I just am very passionate about traditional animation, and I'll continue to stand up for it.

And thanks! Ha-ha. Sorry again for the long post!

Okay, I'm maybe not the best person to critique (I know for a fact you're in a higher level of art than me) but overall, he looks really good! You captured his animated...ness... really well! The only thing I think is on the second one on the far left, something about his nose looks a little weird. I think it could be the angle you drew it at. But it all looks so good! I can't wait for this movie, and you did a great job drawing this character!

Gee. Thank you so very much! You're right in that his nose does look odd in places. It's been kind of tricky for me to get that right at various angles. I'll need to practice more on that. Thanks a bunch for the comments and critique! :aww:
